The day was new, the clouds hiding the warming rays of the sun, and the birds calling out their morning song. Everything was peaceful at the time, but, that was going to change with the entrance of just one apprentice. She was an odd looking apprentice, but not one short of beauty. The thing that always got looks from others though, was the absence of a long tail. Rather, the tail on this apprentice was short, like a Manx cat, and not too useful for the poor felines sense of balance. Maybe that was part of the reason she was who she was.
Hazardpaw was out here for one reason at this early time of day. She wanted to stay away from everyone, but still provide for her clan. You see, Hazardpaw had always considered herself unlucky, she was always hurting herself, or others, somehow. The first time it had happened with others, Hazardpaw had reacted strongly, just had been easily soothed by the one who had been in her way. As the moons progressed though, things had only gotten worse, and her self esteem had only gotten lower. Now, it was a horror to be around anyone, the fear she might hurt them was too strong, and if anyone got seriously hurt, then Hazardpaw would die of the embarrassment and the guilt that would follow.
Which was why this was the perfect time of day for the apprentice. Although she didn't try to get in the water, she for some reason disliked the clear pool, it was going to happen sooner then she thought. It was the fault of a wet log which had been hidden, and the large paws that Hazardpaw had been cursed with. Not paying attention, she banged her front paw against the log, and while she had been leaping back from the pain, her hind foot slipped.
With a 'sploosh' the young apprentice fell into the pool. For a moment it was as though she had drown, silence. And then, with a splash, Hazardpaw resurfaced, coughing slightly, but alright. Pulling herself up to the bank, a sigh ripped from her, and she turned to attend to her cuts, telling herself that it was better she was alone, she didn't want to hurt anyone.
But how true was that?
